A – E

Accelerated learning.

A system of learning derived from scientific studies pertaining to brain functions, the acquisition and retention of knowledge, and learning techniques that engage both the analytical and emotional brain.

Add location.

A function for authorizing a location in an organization to use GreatBizTools assessment products and services.

Add new data.

A function for entering into a company's database new information on individuals regarding hiring decisions and termination decisions.

Add records.

A function for entering into a company's database demographic and assessment data on individuals who have completed paper-and-pencil versions of the GreatBizTools online assessments.

Administrator.

An individual in an organization who has been authorized to use GreatBizTools assessment products and services.

Administrator profile.

A profile established for an individual to use GreatBizTools assessment products and services.

Adverse impact.

As described by The Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures (1978), adverse impact occurs "when a substantially different rate of selection in any employment decision works to the disadvantage of members of a race, sex, or ethnic group."

Adverse impact analysis.

A special type of study for determining if an assessment process adversely affects the employment opportunities of any race, sex, or ethnic group.

Adverse impact report.

A report containing statistics for determining if an assessment process adversely affects the employment opportunities of any race, sex, or ethnic group.

Answer sheet.

A form used by individuals to record responses to items included in a paper-based assessment.

Applicant.

An individual who applies for a job in an organization.

Archive profile.

A function for saving an Assessment Results Profile in a permanent file from which the profile can be retrieved, viewed, and printed.

Assessment (also called assessment device).

A test or device used to measure a type of knowledge, skill, ability, or job-related trait for determining an individual's suitability for a given job.

Assessment Administration and Scoring Guide.

A manual containing assessment guidelines and a step-by-step procedure for administering and scoring our paper-and-pencil assessments.

Assessment battery (also called battery).

An assessment or group of assessments that are administered to evaluate an individual's competencies in a comprehensive manner. Although a battery technically includes more than one assessment, for administrative purposes we also consider it to be a battery if only one assessment is included.

Assessment booklet.

A bound document containing one or more paper-and-pencil assessments.

Assessment database.

An organized collection of related data on all applicants and employees who have been assessed in an organization.

Assessment device.

See assessment.

Assessment order.

The order in which assessments are administered in a battery containing more than one assessment. If granted the privilege, administrators may change the recommended assessment order.

Assessment recommendation.

Our recommendation regarding giving an applicant or candidate further consideration for employment or promotion, respectively, based on established assessment standards and assessment results.

Assessment results.

The information provided to authorized administrators regarding the outcomes of an assessment administered to an individual. Such information typically includes a raw score, a percentile score, and an indication of whether the individual met an assessment standard.

Assessment Results Profile.

A standard report containing the assessment results for an individual who has completed one or more online assessments on our website. This report provides established standards, raw scores, a graphic presentation of percentile scores, and pertinent information pertaining to an assessment session (e.g., date of session, starting and ending times, name of administrator).

Assessment session.

The period of time during which an individual or group of individuals is administered one or more assessments.

Assessment standard.

The minimum raw score required on an assessment for an individual to be given consideration for employment or advancement in an organization.

Associate Company Administrator.

The individual selected by the Company Administrator to provide assistance or to serve as a backup regarding business interactions between one's organization and GreatBizTools.com.

Associate Location Administrator.

An individual selected by the Company Administrator or other authorized administrator to provide assistance or to serve as a backup to a Location Administrator.

Authorization Code.

A unique security code, consisting of four digits, that provides access to WebAssess®, our online assessment system. This code is generated when Session IDs are requested. A different Authorization Code, along with its corresponding Session ID, is required for each assessment session.

Authorized administrator.

An individual in an organization who has been assigned a particular privilege by the Company Administrator or another administrator.

Average (also called mean or arithmetic mean).

The value obtained by dividing the sum of a set of quantities by the number of quantities in the set.

Backorder.

A product not currently in stock but to be sold or delivered when it becomes available.

Battery.

See assessment battery.

BizTool (also called business tool).

A free or fee-based online service pertaining to an evaluation instrument that provides information, guidance, or advice regarding human resource management issues.

Build assessment battery.

A function for selecting one or more assessments to be administered to individuals applying for or working in a selected job classification. Building an assessment battery also includes specifying the purpose of the assessment, assessment standards, and the order in which assessments are to be administered.

Business affiliate.

A person or organization that has developed or owns products offered on our website.

Candidate.

An individual currently working in an organization who is applying for a higher-level job (i.e., promotion).

Challenge question.

A question asked during our registration and account opening process to obtain specific information that can be used to verify the identity of an individual.

Company Account.

The formal business relationship established by the Company Administrator to provide individuals in an organization access to GreatBizTools products and services.

Company Administrator.

The individual ultimately responsible for all business interactions between one's organization and GreatBizTools.com.

Company's database.

An organization's database containing demographic, assessment, and other data on individuals who have completed GreatBizTools web-based and paper-based assessments.

Competency.

A type of knowledge, skill, ability, or trait that underlies and contributes to job performance.

Competency-based.

A characteristic of a human resource management technique or system (e.g. selection system, training and development program) that has been designed to measure or address competencies required for job success.

Competency model.

A set of defined competencies that have been identified through analytic methods to be important or critical for success in a given job or job group.

Compliant ISP.

An Internet Service Provider that automatically enables SSL sessions, which safeguard an individual's personal information.

Complimentary product.

A specified quantity of a product that we are offering a customer or potential customer free of charge.

Conduct new search.

A function for aborting a current search for a specific record in an organization's database and starting another search by specifying new search criteria.

Conduct search.

A function for finding a specific record in an organization's assessment database.

Create Administrator Profile.

A function for adding a new individual in an organization to the list of authorized administrators who are granted access to the Company Account.

Create customized Privilege Profile.

A function for creating and saving a cluster of privileges specifically selected for a type of administrator in an organization.

Customized Privilege Profile.

A cluster of privileges specifically selected for a type of administrator in an organization by the Company Administrator or other authorized administrator. Such profiles are customized to meet the unique needs of an organization.

Demographic group.

A group of individuals defined by one or more characteristics (e.g., in a sample of applicants, "females" and "males" are two demographic groups).

Demographics.

Data describing certain characteristics of individuals, including gender, age, race/ethnic group, education level, and amount of relevant work experience.

Distribution.

A set of numbers and their frequency of occurrence.

Download database.

A function for transferring an organization's assessment database from the GreatBizTools server to another computer.

Edit records.

A function for adding or changing records contained in an organization's assessment database.

Empirically validated.

Pertaining to a test or assessment device that has been subjected to a statistical study in which the findings have indicated that the scores correlate significantly to one or more criterion measures.

Employment status.

A variable indicating whether an individual was an applicant or employee at the time he/she was administered assessments in an organization.

Enabled cookies.

Cookies on a browser that allow you to provide or access personal information required to perform certain functions on our website (e.g., order products).

ESL.

Acronym for "English as a second language." Used to refer to the learning of English by speakers of other languages.

ESL appropriate.

Pertaining to an assessment that is appropriate for individuals who speak English as a second language. An individual who is administered an "ESL appropriate" assessment does not need to be able to read and understand English to complete the assessment, as long as the instructions for the assessment are translated into the individual's native language.

Exempt employee.

An employee who is not entitled to the benefits and protections of the Federal Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the federal law that governs wages and hours. For example, an exempt employee, who is typically paid a salary, does not have to be paid minimum wage or paid in accordance with the overtime requirements specified by the FLSA.

Face validity.

A pseudo-validity in which a test or assessment appears (on the face of it) to measure what it is purported to measure. For example, a test has "face validity" if it appears that it measures what the developers claim it measures.

Fee-based service.

Any service provided on our website that is associated with a monthly service fee, annual service fee, or annual license fee.

Frequency distribution.

A set of intervals, usually adjacent and of equal width, into which the range of a statistical distribution is divided, each associated with a frequency indicating the number of measurements in that interval.

GreatBizTools Account Manager.

The GreatBizTools representative assigned to a Company Account who is responsible for addressing any issues that may arise pertaining to the account.

Hiring decision.

The decision, typically made by a supervisor or manager, to offer an individual employment in an organization or to eliminate the individual from further consideration for employment.

Involuntary termination.

The discontinuation of employment based on management's decision to discharge an individual from a job for various reasons (e.g., poor job performance, insubordination, theft, drug use). An individual who is terminated in this way leaves an organization involuntarily.

Job classification.

A specific kind of job (e.g., file clerk) categorized within a job cluster (e.g., general clerical jobs).

Job family.

A large group of jobs (e.g., financial support jobs) characterized by certain types of job duties, competencies required for successful job performance, and job conditions that relate to important aspects of work.

Job performance area (also called job performance dimension).

A distinct aspect of the work performed by employees in a given job or job group. An employee may perform well in one area (e.g., is very productive), but may not perform well in another area (e.g., makes many errors).

Job performance dimension.

See job performance area.

Job-related trait.

A characteristic or personality tendency, especially one that distinguishes an individual from others, that is required for successful performance on a given job.

K – O

Key indicator.

A type of response to an employment interview question that suggests an applicant possesses a particular knowledge, skill, ability, or trait.

"Licensed" customer status.

A state in which a customer is entitled to receive the benefits stipulated in our License Agreement.

Licensed account.

A type of Company Account allowing customers to have unlimited access to selected products and fee-based services for an annual license fee.

Location.

Any unit, department, division, office, or physical site identified by a Company Administrator or other authorized administrator.

Location Administrator.

An individual selected by the Company Administrator or other authorized administrator to assume responsibility regarding the use of GreatBizTools assessment products and services at a particular location in the organization.

Location name.

A name or code, which is assigned by a Company Administrator or other authorized administrator, that identifies a location in an organization.

Lock out.

A security procedure that denies access to a Company Account if an individual is unable to login successfully after a specified number of attempts.

Manage credit cards.

A function for changing credit card information previously provided.

Mean.

See average.

Median.

The middle value in a distribution, above and below which lie an equal number of values.

Membership account.

A type of Company Account allowing customers to purchase our products on an "as needed" basis and to have unlimited access to selected fee-based services for a monthly or annual service fee.

Missing data.

Information that was not provided by individuals during assessment sessions (e.g., gender, age) or by administrators after assessment sessions have been completed (e.g., hiring decision).

Mode.

The value occurring most frequently in a distribution of numbers.

Multiple interview.

Interviews involving two or more people interviewing the same applicant at different times.

Non-exempt employee.

An employee who is entitled to the benefits and protections of the Federal Labor Standards Act, the federal law that governs wages and hours. For example, a non-exempt employee, who is paid an hourly wage, is entitled to a minimum wage, overtime pay, and other benefits and protections prescribed by the FLSA.

Norms group.

The sample of people (often employees) who have been administered an assessment that was designed for a particular purpose, such as selecting individuals for certain jobs. The distribution of raw scores in the norms group can be used for establishing an assessment standard when assessing applicants.

Offline.

Not connected to a computer or computer network.

Online product.

Any of our products that can be administered on WebAssess®, our online assessment system.

Opt out.

To choose not to use a service we offer or to receive special emails from us.

P – T

Panel interview.

An interview involving two or more people interviewing the same applicant at the same time.

Paper-based product.

Any of our products that are printed on paper and shipped to customers. Most of our paper-based products may also be purchased as online products.

Pay invoice.

A function for paying an invoice online.

Percentile.

The percentage of people in the norms group who obtained a raw score lower than a particular raw score. For example, a percentile of 60 (or 60th percentile) for an individual on a particular assessment represents a raw score that is higher than 60% of the scores in the norms group. Since raw scores are difficult to interpret, they are converted to percentiles. Percentiles allow people to compare the performance of an individual on an assessment to the performance of all individuals in the norms group.

Percentile score.

A raw score on an assessment that has been converted into a percentile.

Permanent cookies.

Special messages in text files, sent to your computer by our servers, that allow us to keep track of your activity on our website and to provide you better service. Although permanent cookies remain on your hard drive when you close your browser, they cannot collect any information from your hard drive, cannot be used to find out anything about you, and cannot be used to spread computer viruses.

Personality scale.

A trait-based measure contained in a personality-related instrument. For example, a personality inventory may contain multiple scales that measure several traits.

Personally identifiable information.

Any information that identifies an individual or can be used to identify, contact, or locate an individual. This information includes any information from which an individual's identification or contact information can be derived. Unique information (e.g., personal profile, unique identifier), which by itself cannot be used to identify an individual, is considered personally identifiable information if it is associated with personally identifiable information. Personally identifiable information includes, but is not limited to the following: name, address, telephone number, fax number, email address, social security number, financial profile, credit card information. Personally identifiable information does not include information that is collected anonymously or demographic information that is not connected to an identified individual.

Privilege.

A special permission or right granted to an administrator to perform a particular task on the WebAssess® online assessment system. For example, privileges may include tasks such as administering assessments, viewing assessment results, and generating reports.

Probation.

A specified period during which a new employee is evaluated to determine whether the individual is able to meet the requirements of a job.

Promotional product.

A product we are offering our customers and potential customers at a reduced price for a limited period of time.

Purchase date.

For online products, the date on which customers use web-based assessments; for paper-based products, the date on which we ship products to customers.

Purpose of assessment.

One of the following objectives for administering an assessment or assessment battery to an individual: employment, reassessment, promotion, training and development, research.

Range.

The difference or interval between the smallest and largest values in a frequency distribution.

Raw score.

Typically expressed by a whole number, the number of "correct" answers on an assessment. Sometimes raw scores are converted to "percent correct."

Reassess.

To administer an assessment to an individual who had previously completed the assessment but who had not met the established assessment standard.

Reassessment.

The process of administering an assessment or assessment battery to an individual who had previously completed the assessment(s).

Recommended assessment.

A GreatBizTools assessment that we recommend to be administered to an individual applying for a given standard job group or classification.

Record.

An organized collection of demographic, assessment, and other data about an individual.

Refund period.

The number of days since a customer purchased paper-based products in a given purchase order (e.g., 0-30 days, 31-60 days, 61-90 days). Refund periods are used for refund purposes.

Register.

To enroll as a user of GreatBizTools.com in order to order products and to use the secured areas of our website, such as WebAssess®, our online testing system.

Remove administrator profile.

A function for removing a given administrator from the list of authorized administrators in an organization.

Remove location.

A function for deleting a location in an organization from the list of locations authorized to use GreatBizTools assessment products and services.

Remove report.

A function for deleting a report that was previously generated and saved.

A function for obtaining authorization to return paper-based products.

Request RMA extension.

A function for requesting a five-day extension to the return deadline indicated on an RMA.

Request Session IDs.

A function for generating one or more Session IDs, which are needed to use our assessments on WebAssess®, our online testing system.

Return deadline.

The latest acceptable delivery date for products that a customer is shipping back to us, typically 10 calendar days after the date an RMA is issued.

RMA.

An acronym for "Return Material Authorization."

RMA number.

A unique number that we assign to product return requests we have authorized.

Sample size.

The number of individuals (N) included in an analysis or statistical report.

Score distribution.

The frequency distribution of raw scores for an assessment.

Score statistics.

Frequency distributions and descriptive statistics of raw scores, including means, medians, modes, and score ranges.

Scoring template.

A clear plastic overlay used to score a paper-based assessment.

Search.

A function for finding one or more records in a database based on certain criteria provided.

Search criteria.

The specific information used to conduct a search for a particular record in an organization's assessment database.

Self-report assessment.

An instrument, such as a personality inventory, in which individuals are asked to provide information about themselves. This information typically yields one or more scores on scales that measure specific personality traits.

Service provider.

A third party that provides certain services on our behalf (e.g., processing credit card and financial information).

Session cookies.

Special messages in text files, sent to your computer by our servers, that allow us to keep track of your activity on our website and to provide you better service. Unlike permanent cookies that remain on your hard drive, sessions cookies are automatically erased from your computer's temporary memory when you close your browser.

Session ID.

A unique security code, consisting of eight alphanumeric characters, that provides access to WebAssess®, our online assessment system. A different Session ID is required for each assessment session.

Skill and ability assessment.

A type of test used to evaluate an individual's skill or ability in an area of interest (e.g., data entry, reading comprehension, math).

Spyware.

Software, which we never use, that invades people's privacy and collects personal information without a person's knowledge.

SSL Certificate.

A document testifying that we have been validated as a legitimate business, that we are a legally accountable organization, and that we use secured, encrypted links every time you provide or receive personal information on our website.

SSL-compatible browser.

A browser that supports SSL (e.g., Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer).

SSL technology.

Security technology (i.e., Secure Sockets Layer) that encrypts information transmitted over the Internet between a personal computer and our servers, preventing unauthorized individuals from reading the information being transmitted.

Standard account.

A type of Company Account allowing customers to purchase our products and fee-based services on an "as needed" basis.

Standard deviation (SD).

A statistic used as a measure of the dispersion or variation in a distribution.

Standard Privilege Profile.

A cluster of privileges recommended for administrators in jobs with particular roles and responsibilities. Such profiles have been developed for the following types of individuals with different degrees of responsibility in the areas of recruitment and selection: Company Administrator (all privileges), Associate Company Administrator, Location Administrator, Associate Location Administrator.

Standard service charge.

A fee, which is based on a specified schedule, charged to our customers who return purchased products.

Start assessment session.

A function for beginning an assessment session with an applicant or employee.

Structured interview.

A methodical approach for interviewing job applicants in which predetermined questions are used to elicit responses that are analyzed according to a prescribed procedure.

Supervising Administrator.

The individual an administrator "reports to" regarding GreatBizTools assessments. Each administrator in an organization (except the Company Administrator) is assigned a Supervising Administrator.

Terminate account.

A function for closing a Company Account.

Termination decision.

The decision, typically made by a supervisor or manager, to discharge an individual from a job for various reasons, or to discontinue the employment of an individual who wants to leave an organization on his/her own free will.

Termination status.

A variable indicating whether an employee is still employed in an organization, has left the organization voluntarily, or has been terminated involuntarily.

Time limit.

The maximum amount of time allowed for completing a given assessment.

Training needs analysis.

A structured approach, often involving the use of assessments, for determining the training needs of individuals or groups within an organization.

Trait.

A job-related characteristic, especially one that distinguishes an individual from others.

Trait assessment.

A type of test used to evaluate job-related personality traits or characteristics that have been found to be associated with successful job performance.

Transfer account.

A function for transferring the Company Account to another person in an organization.

Transparent graphic images.

Images (e.g., pixel tags, clear GIFS, Web beacons), which cannot collect identifiable information, used to monitor a person's activity on our website so that we can provide better service.

"Trial" customer status.

An assigned status in which a customer has unlimited, free access to selected products and fee-based services for a specified period of time.

Turnover rate.

The ratio of the number of employees who have left (both voluntarily and involuntarily) a given job in an organization over a twelve-month period to the total number of employees in the job. Turnover rates are usually annualized if fewer than 12 months of turnover data exist.

Unidentifiable information.

Information we receive when you visit our website that cannot be used to identify you personally (e.g., your domain name, IP address, browser version).

Validation study.

An empirical approach for determining the statistical relationship between people's test performance and job performance.

Voluntary termination.

The discontinuation of employment based on an employee's decision to leave an organization on his/her own free will. An individual who is terminated in this way leaves an organization voluntarily.

WebAssess®.

A comprehensive, secured web-based system used by authorized individuals in organizations to plan, administer, score, and manage the evaluation of applicants and employees for employment, promotion, training and development, and certification purposes.

Work Preferences Questionnaire (WPQ).

A personality-related instrument, developed by GreatBizTools, that measures certain job-related traits, interests, and motivational tendencies required for successful performance in certain jobs.
